Tecport Optics, in conjunction with Axon Optics, has developed an optical interference filter coating process for plastic spectacle lenses that blocks the specific wavelengths of light that have been implicated as the cause of photophobic symptoms; particularly those associated with triggering and exacerbating migraine headaches. The lenses reduce or eliminate light sensitivity for wearers, but without the undesirable color distortion experienced when wearing tinted lenses.
The University of Utah has registered the existing proprietary property, which specifically includes United States provisional patent application no. 61/433,344 and PCT patent application no. PCT/US12/21500, characterized as “Process to Reduce Light Sensitivity in Individuals including Migraine Headaches”.
Bradley Katz, MD, PhD, CEO of Axon said; “This is an excellent time to introduce prescription or non-prescription eyewear for the relief of migraine headaches for consumers who are light sensitive. Our goal with this eyewear is to reduce the need for prescription and over-the-counter headache remedies. More than 30 million Americans suffer from light sensitivity and abnormal intolerance to light with multiple associations such as migraines, traumatic brain injury and blepharospasm. Half of sufferers seeking a migraine cure take a prescription medication, accounting for $2B in migraine prescription drugs sales that may result in side effects. We are very pleased to be collaborating with Tecport to commercialize these prescription and non-prescription lenses worldwide.”
Dr. Nabil El Hag, Vice Chairman of Tecport said; “We are very pleased to be working with Axon and the University of Utah on this technology. Clinical trails are in the 2nd stage and Axon is in the process of applying for FDA acceptance. This application of the Axon technology in conjunction with Tecport’s revolutionary Cold Plasma (“Polaris”) process for multi layer thin film coating on plastics will open up a major avenue for market penetration and increased revenue. This increase in revenue will be generated by expanding Tecport’s core business using "Hot Plasma products applications" and launching its "Cold Plasma products applications” to the military, industrial and the consumer market segments.”
Founded in 1997, Tecport designs, manufactures, sell and services state-of-the-art thin film vacuum deposition systems to customers across the globe. Working vigorously with its world-class instrument suppliers, Tecport builds the most reliable, efficient, and flexible-coating systems in the world, customized to the meet the technical specifications of a variety of industries. Axon Optics was born after a neuro-ophthalmologist, an optics researcher, and a marketing professional got together during the summer of 2010 to help people with migraine and light sensitivity. Using the latest research performed at the Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah, the first line of products based upon a therapeutic tint was launched June 2011. Research is underway at the Moran Eye Center to develop improved preventative migraine coatings for ophthalmic applications. www.axonoptics.com
